Fires Send Smoke Billowing In East And West Baltimore

Multiple homes caught fire on Tuesday, and one firefighter was injured, officials said.

BALTIMORE, MD — Two residential fires in Baltimore on Tuesday sent smoke billowing. Several homes were affected by the flames, and the Baltimore City Fire Department reported that one firefighter was injured.

The injury occurred as crews battled a house fire near Sandtown-Winchester, in the 1200 block of Whatcoat Street, officials said. When the fire broke out before 8 p.m., the Baltimore City Fire Department reported nobody was home in the two-story residence.

The cause of that fire remains under investigation, and one firefighter was taken for medical treatment of injuries that authorities said were minor.

Crews found heavy fire when they were called to the blaze on Whatcoat Street, officials said, and it was the second incident in several hours that produced a significant amount of smoke.

Earlier, fire broke out amid rowhouses in east Baltimore on Tuesday afternoon, according to reports.

The fire in the unit block of South Potomac Street began in the roof of one of the homes and spread, WBAL reported. Nobody was in the residences at the time the fire broke out, before 2:40 p.m. There were no reported injuries.

Smoke was visible for miles from the east Baltimore blaze.
