In 2019, the show is playing in major cities including Austin, Baltimore, Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Kansas City, New Orleans, New York, Orlando, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Antonio, San Francisco and Tampa.
Theatergoers in Baltimore can expect to see a show that moves at a brisk pace. “Hamilton” immediately launches into a rapid-fire rap about the founding father, who was many things: a lawyer, military leader, economist, journalist, political scientist and government official.
Hamilton lived from 1755-1804 and was known for, among other things, persuading New Yorkers to agree to ratify the U.S. Constitution and for serving as the country’s first treasury secretary.
“That first act, specifically, feels like you just got onto a roller coaster. It takes off and you don’t come up for air until intermission,” writes reviewer Kathy Hanrahan for the Associated Press. “The ensemble is so strong that you are just mesmerized while they are on stage.” She notes it is a “true” musical. There’s no dialogue that isn’t sung in some way and the score weaves in rap, R&B, jazz and hip-hop, which she says contributes to the show’s intensity.
Theatergoers will become acquainted with Hamilton’s wife, Eliza, as well as his killer, Aaron Burr. In fact, Miranda said he first became interested in Hamilton in high school when he wrote a paper on the fateful 1804 duel between Hamilton and then Vice President Aaron Burr. That interest was rekindled when he read a biography on Hamilton in 2004.
"Hamilton" is based on Ron Chernow's biography of Alexander Hamilton.
“As I’m reading the book it was one of those rare experiences where I was also picturing it,” he told The New York Times in a 2012 interview. "The book is incredible. It makes Hamilton’s life seem like Dickens. It out-Dickens Dickens, the improbability of where this guy started and where he got.”
Miranda described Hamilton as someone who managed to pull himself out of “unbelievably humble circumstances,” using the gift of his words and ideas to reach the highest levels of the nation.
“Then he sort of destroyed that good will as he continued to fight and continued to believe he was the smartest guy in the room,” said Miranda. “He was so earnest and so honest that games of political tact that his contemporaries played better, like Jefferson and Burr, he couldn’t play them."
The show won 13 Tony Awards in 2016, for everything from costume design to musical score to choreography.
In addition, "Hamilton" won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for drama and the 2016 Grammy for best musical theater album.
"Hamilton" will be on stage from June 25 to July 31, 2019, at The Hippodrome, 12 N. Eutaw St., Baltimore, MD 21201.
