Orioles Game Postponed Against Marlins Due To Coronavirus Cases

MIAMI, FL — The Baltimore Orioles game slated for Monday night was one of two postponed due to concerns over the coronavirus. Major League Baseball issued the announcement Monday.

"Tonight's scheduled games between the Miami Marlins and the Baltimore Orioles at Marlins Park and the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Yankees at Citizens Bank Park have been postponed while Major League Baseball conducts additional COVID-19 testing," a statement from Major League Baseball said.

Miami Marlins have canceled the team's home opener Monday against the Baltimore Orioles after a number of Florida players and coaches tested positive for the coronavirus, according to ESPN.

"Postponing tonight's home opener was the correct decision to ensure we take a collective pause and try to properly grasp the totality of this situation," Marlins CEO and former Yankee great Derek Jeter said on Monday.

ESPN reported Monday the Marlins had a total of 14 players and coaches who tested positive for the coronavirus in recent days after the first player tested positive 72 hours ago.

The Marlins were in first place of the National League East Monday after a 2-1 start against the Philadelphia Phillies in Philadelphia over the weekend.

The team was scheduled to return to Miami for a home opener against the Baltimore Orioles at 7:05 p.m. Monday in Marlins Park.

The Phillies were scheduled to play the New York Yankees on Monday at 7:05 p.m. in Philadelphia but canceled that game as well.

Both the Phillies and the Marlins personnel will undergo testing before resuming play.

The news comes just days into the new, significantly abbreviated 60-game MLB season, which opened Thursday. There were several cases of coronavirus in the training camps in recent weeks, but this marks the first outbreak of the young season.

Members of the Marlins team are self-quarantining while they await results of testing, the league said in a statement. The Phillies have not announced any new positive test results.

"Major League Baseball has been coordinating with the Major League Baseball Players Association; the Marlins; the Orioles; the Marlins' weekend opponent, the Phillies; and Club medical staffs, and will continue to provide updates as appropriate," the statement reads.
