📰 News we're reading

1. Baltimore affordable housing program is missing three years of annual reports (foxbaltimore.com) — Baltimore residents are learning that the city's $111 million Affordable Housing Trust Fund has not released required annual reports since 2022, leaving taxpayers with limited insight into how their money is spent. City officials blame staff constraints and a pending four-year audit, but now promise to publish three overdue reports this week as voters weigh a November charter amendment to borrow more for housing.

2. City to sell former Waverly Middle for conversion to Waverly Teachers' Eco Village (baltimorefishbowl.com) — Baltimore's Board of Estimates has approved selling the long-vacant former Waverly Middle School on East 34th Street so it can be converted into a 37-unit Waverly Teachers' Eco-Village. The $13.3 million project will create zero-energy apartments for city teachers and school staff, backed by state bond funding, and aims to eliminate blight while adding new community spaces and returning the property to the tax rolls.

3. One World Cafe in North Baltimore experiences second break-in in little more than a month (wbal.com) — A North Baltimore favorite, One World Cafe, is reeling after its second break-in in just over a month, when thieves smashed the glass door and ripped out the cash register. The early-morning burglary left employees without shifts, forced costly equipment repairs, and disrupted business, but nearby residents are rallying around the owners as they work to recover yet again.

4. APG FCU Employees Volunteer to Help Fight Food Insecurity (thecudaily.com) — Baltimore residents are benefiting from APG Federal Credit Union's Hunger Action Month push, which sent dozens of employee volunteers to help pack meals and pantry items across Baltimore City and County. The credit union also donated $10,000 to the Baltimore Hunger Project, bolstering food supplies for school pantries and weekend meal programs serving local students and seniors.

5. Baltimore Stricker Street fire testimony centers field light test, surveillance video (wbal.com) — Jurors in Baltimore are hearing detailed testimony about the 2022 Stricker Street rowhome fire that killed three city firefighters and seriously injured a fourth. ATF agents described surveillance video, light-source field tests using a butane lighter and potato chips, and evidence that led them to focus on defendant James Barnett, while the defense questions whether camera flashes were actually car headlights.
