Ravens Coach John Harbaugh Has Message For U.S. Leaders

The coach of the Baltimore Ravens had a few words for the leaders of the country about what they could learn from football.

OWINGS MILLS, MD — Ravens head coach John Harbaugh addressed the media the day after his contract extension was made official. After he thanked God, the franchise owners, management and the players, he had a few words about football as a whole.

"It's been a joy to come to work every single day, you know, because of the way the players approach things...from a team perspective," Harbaugh said.

From all walks of life and economic backgrounds, the players come together around the sport of football, he said.

“The leaders of our country could learn a lot from football," Harbaugh said, "and I encourage you to do so."

His message came on the second payday that many federal workers would be missing, amid the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. Hours later, on Friday afternoon, President Donald Trump said he would sign a bill to reopen the government until Feb. 15. He called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to put the proposal on the Senate floor immediately.

The partial federal government shutdown started on Friday, Dec. 21, as Trump and Congress battled over funding for a border wall with Mexico.

Thousands of workers felt the pinch on Jan. 11 when they did not get paid for the first time since the shutdown began, and Friday, Jan. 25, is the second missed paycheck for impacted employees.

The state comptroller estimates that 90,000 Marylanders have been either furloughed or working without pay during the government shutdown.
