Severe Thunderstorm Watch, Flood Warnings Issued For Maryland

The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings Tuesday evening for much of Maryland.

BALTIMORE, MD — The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch Tuesday evening for several counties and Baltimore City. A severe thunderstorm watch means thunderstorms may develop that could produce large hail or damaging winds.

When a watch is issued, people are advised to go about their normal activities, keeping an eye to the sky and an ear to the National Weather Service's weather radio or local media for updates and possible warnings.


UPDATE: Multiple jurisdictions are under flood warnings due to heavy rains accompanying thunderstorms.

UPDATE: Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Harford, Howard and Montgomery counties plus Baltimore City are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 8 p.m. calling for 60 mph winds and quarter-sized hail. People in these areas should go inside and stay away from trees until the threat has passed, officials say.


A severe thunderstorm is defined as producing hail the size of a quarter or larger and damaging wind gusts of at least 58 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

The severe thunderstorm watch is effective from 5:55 to 11 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, for the following jurisdictions:

  • Anne Arundel
  • Baltimore
  • Carroll
  • Cecil
  • Frederick
  • Harford
  • Howard
  • Montgomery
  • Prince George's

Wind gusts up to 70 mph and frequent lightning are possible Tuesday evening, according to the National Weather Service.

The flash flood watch continues in most areas until 1 a.m.
