Edgewood Arsonist Facing 2 Murder Charges: Police

A man who doused people with gasoline and lit them on fire now faces new charges.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — An Edgewood man may be charged with murder after a second person has died as the result of a fight that occurred nearly two years ago, police said.

Christopher Harrison Jr., 29, of the 900 block of Topview Drive in Edgewood, was sentenced to 25 years in jail for first-degree assault and reckless endangerment as the result of a plea last year.

Police said two men encountered Harrison on US 40 at Allender Road in White Marsh as they were returning to their car with containers of gasoline after running out of gas in December 2015.

Harrison had been in an ongoing dispute with one of the victims, who was a coworker, officials said.

An altercation broke out, and David Benjamin Campbell, 22, of Middle River, punched Harrison, according to police.

Authorities said Harrison responded to the punch by dousing Campbell with gasoline and lighting him on fire.

Campbell died in January, and following a ruling of death by homicide from the medical examiner, police said a first-degree murder charge was added one week ago. Harrison has a hearing for that charge on June 9, court records show.

Shawn Michael Scarinzi, 25, of the 900 block of Topview Drive in Edgewood, died Monday morning, according to police.

Scarinzi had been standing near Campbell with a container of gasoline during the 2015 encounter, and due to his proximity, he also became engulfed in flames, police said. Both Scarinzi and Campbell were hospitalized from the time of the incident until their deaths.

The results of an autopsy performed on Scarinzi are pending and may result in an additional murder charge being brought against Harrison.
