Fallen Deputies Remembered in Harford County, One Year Later

Harford County used silence, sirens and ceremony to remember two deputies who lost their lives in the line of duty on Feb. 10, 2016.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — It was one year ago that two officers died in the line of duty protecting the citizens of Harford County while responding to a call in Abingdon on Feb. 10, 2016.

Senior Deputy Patrick Dailey was shot at 11:56 a.m. inside Panera and Deputy First Class Mark Logsdon, who pursued the shooter, was fatally struck by the gunman at 12:07 p.m. as the suspect hid near Park View apartments in a vehicle where he had reportedly been living.

Months after the double tragedy, signs were installed along MD 924 designating the road "Heroes Highway."

Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler said every day is a reminder of the sacrifice the two deputies made, and officers come to work to this day "with heavy hearts and tears in their eyes" for their colleagues who served the citizens of Harford County to the end.

"What really makes them heroes is more in the way that they lived," said Pastor Paul Cole, who recently retired from his post as a sergeant, speaking at a memorial ceremony on Friday near the scene of the crime.

"They both were patriots, and they loved their country, and they loved the flag," said Cole.

Dailey was a sergeant in the Marine Corps and Logsdon was a 12-year veteran in the Army.

Cole spoke before a large crowd gathered to salute the lives of those lost at a memorial near the Boulevard at Box Hill shopping center, where a flag was raised to half staff in their honor.

"They were the type of people that would rather give than take," Cole said. "These are men whose lives made ours better for having known them."
