Free Depression Screening

In recognition of National Depression Screening Day, Warner Memorial Presbyterian Church and Pastoral Counseling and Care Ministries are teaming up to offer free depression screenings on Thursday, October 6th from 12 noon to 8pm at Warner Memorial, 10123 Connecticut Avenue, Kensington, MD.  All are welcome and no appointment is needed. Participants will have the opportunity to complete a brief questionnaire, receive information on depression and anxiety, and discuss concerns or questions with a clinical counselor. Appropriate referrals will be made.

Not all wounds are physical. Depression and related mood disorders cannot be seen on an x-ray, yet mental illness can be just as painful as physical illness. However, the stigma associated with mental illness often prevents many from seeking help and getting treated. Another barrier to people seeking treatment is the fact that determining the steps to get support can feel overwhelming.  The Rev. Kirby Lawrence Hill, pastor of the host site congregation, said, "As a congregation dedicated to overall well-being, we are delighted to host this event, where many could possibly get the help they need to move toward wholeness."

National Depression Screening Day gives people access to information and referrals and helps raise awareness about mental illness. The program was started in 1991 by Screening for Mental Health, Inc. (SMH), a non-profit organization.   It is held annually at various locations throughout the country the first week in October, Mental Health Awareness Week.
