Hikes, Virtual Wine Tasting: Coping With Social Distancing In MD
From camping to virtual wine tasting parties, here's how to have fun while social distancing in Maryland.
MARYLAND — Life has upended with offices and schools closed, and families try to figure out how to lower stress and keep kids entertained while not spreading the new coronavirus.
In a bid to contain the spread of the virus, Maryland public health officials are urging people to practice social distancing.
If you're confused about what that looks like, here's an explanation: social distancing means deliberately creating physical space (at least six feet) between you and another person.

Now, that doesn't necessarily mean you won't get COVID-19 — a respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus — but it certainly minimizes the risk of infection and helps flatten the curve, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

So, is there a way to stay safe and grounded? Believe it or not, yes.
Here's how:
Embrace Mother Nature
Hiking
Just because Gov. Larry Hogan has shut down all restaurants, bars, and movie theaters, doesn't mean you can't go outside and have fun.
Hiking is a great way to stay healthy, both physically and mentally. Here's a list of trails to check out in the state.
Some locations are dog-friendly and don't require an entrance fee.
Added bonus: pack a picnic to enjoy at one of many scenic locations along your route.
Kayaking
Kayaking is one of the few sports where you don't have to come in close contact (or interact) with people. Here are some gorgeous locations to explore.
Camping
It's a great family-friendly activity. Not a big nature person? There's no shame in camping in your backyard.
Treat Yourself
Relax and Unwind
Now's as good a time as any to practice some #selfcare. Buy a new face mask, bath bomb, or body lotion. Even better: show your support for a local business and get one there (Ask about their shipping policies!).
Wine Tasting
Order some wine (perhaps from your neighborhood liquor store or winery) and have a virtual wine tasting party with friends and neighbors. This can also be done with beer or spirits — whatever your preference!
Go Digital
Use Your Library Card
Depending on where you live in Maryland, you may be able to get a digital library card.Montgomery County Public Libraries, for instance, offers them to residents. They get access to the library system's digital services and streaming content.
Visit the Zoo
The Maryland Zoo may be closed. But that doesn't mean you can't see the animals...on a live stream. Here's how to get up close and personal — without getting up close and personal.
