MCPS To Distribute Laptops To Students During School Closures

MCPS is giving laptops to students before online classes start next week. The coronavirus closed down schools through at least April 24.

BETHESDA, MD — Montgomery County Public Schools on Wednesday announced that it will be distributing laptops to students so they can participate in online classes next week.

The announcement comes several hours after state Superintendent of Schools Karen Salmon extended the statewide closure of K-12 schools through April 24. Gov. Larry Hogan ordered the extension in an effort to slow the spread of the new coronavirus, which — as of Wednesday evening — has infected 423 people in Maryland.

In a message to the MCPS community, superintendent Jack Smith said the school district will provide Chromebook laptops to students who need them, beginning on Thursday.

"Even though our buildings are closed, we will be proceeding with continuity of learning for our students," Smith wrote. "Part of that plan involves ensuring students with real need have access to Chromebook laptops and the internet. MCPS will begin distributing laptops to students tomorrow, Thursday, March 26."

Smith said devices are in limited supply and are reserved for students who don't have access to one at home. MCPS also has a limited number of mobile Wi-Fi hotspot devices for students who need it, he added. Those devices will be distributed at a later date.

Students, parents, or guardians will need to present a student ID or provide a student ID number to get a laptop. Distribution locations are organized by school level, according to Smith. Here's when and where to pick up a laptop.
