According to WTOP, Martinez was asked to visit Sewell’s apartment to verify that he lived at his listed address. He was attacked even though he wore a bulletproof vest during the visit, reports said.
According to the Post, Martinez suffered at least five wounds to his head and face, a stab wound to his brain and a six-inch slash to his neck. His body was found wrapped in plastic bags and pushed under a bed inside the apartment, reports said.
After arriving at the apartment, Montgomery County police found Martinez's cell phone inside a nearby dumpster. Additionally, his car was parked outside the building, reports said.
The documents did not reveal Martinez's specific cause of death.
When police arrested Sewell, he had been on supervised release from prison for three years. According to reports, Sewell spent 24 years in prison after entering a Montgomery County apartment in 1996 and threatening a young physicist by holding a knife to his throat. Sewell then bound the man’s arms and legs before gagging and raping him, the Post reported.
A funeral service will be held for Martinez on Saturday, June 22, at the Living Word International Christian Church, located at 16819 New Hampshire Ave. in Silver Spring. A wake is planned from 9:30-11 a.m. The funeral service will immediately follow.
"Agent Martinez dedicated his career to serving the community and ensuring public safety," Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services officials said in a statement. "His commitment to his duties and his impact on the lives of those he worked with will not be forgotten."
A livestream of the services will be shared on the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Facebook page.
