Martinez, a six-year employee of the Maryland Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services, had gone to the apartment to conduct a resident check on Sewell, who had been released from prison in 2021.
Police found Martinez's body inside the apartment. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Sewell was located the next day traveling on I-64 near Hurricane, West Virginia. U.S. marshals made a traffic stop and placed Sewell in custody. He faces a second-degree murder charge.
