Montgomery County Schools Calendar: 9 Must-Know Dates for Winter 2016-17

BETHESDA, MD — Students are back in school for just a few more weeks until the extended winter holidays. And parents better pull out the calendar now and start making plans.

Montgomery County School District students get six weekdays away from classrooms, book bags and homework.

According to the school district calendar for 2016-17, the winter holiday begins on Dec. 26 and runs through Monday, Jan. 2. Students get two more days off: Jan. 16 is the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Jan. 20 is a holiday for the presidential inauguration and Jan. 27 is designated as a professional day for teachers.

Here's the complete winter schedule for Montgomery County Public Schools:

• Monday, Dec. 26: Holiday, Schools and Offices Closed
• Tuesday, Dec. 27 to Friday, Dec. 30: Winter break, no school for students and teachers

And we'll throw in four important dates to kick off 2017:

• Monday, Jan. 2: Holiday - New Year’s Day Offices and schools closed
• Monday, Jan. 16: Holiday - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - Schools and Offices Closed
• Friday, Jan. 20: Holiday - Schools and Offices Closed
• Friday, Jan. 27: Professional day for teachers, No School for Students

The extended forecast for the winter holidays includes little chance of a white Christmas with highs in the mid-to upper 40s that week, followed by cooler temps and a chance of ice, rain and snow flurries right before New Year's Eve.

The Montgomery County Public Library System will hold several special events during the time away from class, including at teen movie showing of "Ant Man" at the Gaithersburg Library, a Happy Noon Year celebration at the Bethesda Library, and a round of Pokemon Go at the Chevy Chase Library.
