Police Identify Man Shot to Death at Metro Station

Montgomery County Police say two suspects are in custody in the Silver Spring man's death.

The man shot and killed near the parking garage at the Wheaton Metro station was identified Wednesday as Eric Melgar, 20, of the 3000 block of Whispering Pines Drive in Silver Spring.

The two suspects charged with first-degree murder in the case are Douglas Shannon Chase, 19, of Washington, D.C., and Brent Deon Sanderson, 18, of the 4600 block of West Frankfort Drive in Rockville. They are being held without bond.

Montgomery County Police responded to a report of shots fired in or near the Metro garage just after 7 p.m. Tuesday. The incident happened at the Redline station’s garage at 11171 Georgia Ave.

Investigators believe Melgar was involved in a confrontation with two suspects inside the garage. One of the suspects had a handgun and began firing at the victim. The suspects then ran from the garage on foot.

When police officers caught up with the suspects, a firearm was reportedly found in their possession.

Any relationship between the victim and suspects and the nature of the confrontation and motive for the shooting remain under investigation, police say.
