ROCKVILLE, MD — Montgomery County Police are warning drivers not to fall for an email scam that claims they have been ticketed by a speed camera. The bogus email has the subject line: Your fine for speeding. So if you receive such an email, the best thing to do is ignore it, police said.
The email says that the driver was caught speeding in Rockville, lists a made-up case number, and demands that the recipient pay $535.99 to resolve the ticket. That's one red flag: Maryland law only allows a maximum fine of $40 for speed camera violations.
Comments on the police department's Facebook page shared their own thoughts on the value and legality of speed cameras. "Speed cameras in general are a scam. Just sayin’," posted commenter Stanley Barsch.
While another driver said, "See I didn’t really speed, I’m getting scammed."
Correspondence from the police department notifying a car owner of a speed camera or red light camera violation is sent only through the U.S. mail in the form of a civil citation. Driver are never notified of a violation via email or phone.
Residents in Montgomery County and in other parts of the country have reported receiving speed camera phishing emails like this example.

Anyone with questions about a Montgomery County speed or red light camera violation should call the Safe Speed Enforcement Unit at 240-773-6050.
