8th Grade Math Teacher Named 2022 Prince George’s County Teacher of the Year

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Benjamin Tasker Middle School eighth grade math teacher Evelyn Policarpio has been named 2022 Prince George’s County Teacher of the Year. Policarpio was selected from more than 50 candidates.

“It takes a special type of teacher to get students excited about math,” Monica Goldson, CEO of Prince George's County Public Schools. “Ms. Policarpio demonstrates this skill every day in her classroom. Along with providing outstanding instruction, she also creates a welcoming environment where students feel accepted, appreciated and valued – the perfect combination for winning teaching and learning.”

A 35-year educator, Policarpio has spent 14 years of her career serving students in PGCPS. She will compete for Maryland Teacher of the Year, coordinated by the Maryland State Department of Education. Her prizes included $2,000 from Kaiser Permanente for a classroom technology upgrade and a new laptop. Kaiser Permanente also donated $2,500 to Benjamin Tasker for academic instruction support and student needs.

“Ms. Policarpio goes above and beyond to support her students and challenge them with rigor and engagement,” said Benjamin Tasker Middle School Principal Dr. Kendra Hill. “She has wonderful relationships with students, families and colleagues alike, and she is a wonderful resource for sharing strategies for success in mathematics instruction. A master teacher, she is truly deserving to be recognized as teacher of the year. ”

Policarpio has been recognized for excellence throughout her career, including receiving the 2021 MEGGY Award by the Maryland Educators of Gifted Students, EGATE Outstanding Educator in Gifted and Talented Education — Teacher as Leader and 2009 Outstanding Teacher by PDK International (AU Chapter 0151).

Alphonso Jiles, Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School director of instrumental music, was named first runner-up, and Menet McCoy, Melwood Elementary fifth grade science/social studies International Baccalaureate teacher, was second runner-up.
