Witnesses told FOX DC that when the motorcycle hit the car, it then went flying across the intersection and struck a group of pedestrians standing on the sidewalk across from the mall. The driver was also thrown from the bike.
Investigators say it appears a motorcycle heading westbound on East West Highway collided with a car that was making a left turn into a shopping center. The rider was thrown from the motorcycle, which then crashed into four pedestrians who were standing on the sidewalk at the crosswalk waiting to cross the street.
All four pedestrians, one man and three children, suffered injuries. Alejandro Santos died at a hospital a short time later, police say.
The adult’s injuries are considered life-threatening. Of the two surviving children, one suffered critical injuries and the second suffered non-life threatening injuries. The motorcycle rider also suffered non-life threatening injuries. The car’s driver suffered minor injuries.
The motorcycle rider’s speed appears to be a factor in the crash, police said, and the collision remains under investigation. Once the investigation is complete, investigators will present their findings to the State’s Attorney’s Office to determine if charges will be filed.
