Bowie Man Slammed On Twitter For Writing Book About Respecting Police

"Home Alive: 11 Must Rules for Surviving Encounters with the Police" drew a swift negative reaction on Twitter.

BOWIE, MD — A Bowie doctor who wrote a book about how black people can survive encounters with the police is getting hammered on Twitter.

Dr. Geoffrey Mount Varner, a Maryland emergency room doctor who is black, wrote a book called "Home Alive: 11 Must Rules for Surviving Encounters with the Police" that was featured in a story posted on WTOP.

Reaction from the Twittersphere was swift and fierce after it was posted on Wednesday, with many interpreting the title as blaming black victims rather than the police officers that pull the trigger.

Mount Varner, however, said that the title has been misinterpreted, and it is simply about educating black people on how to get home alive and doesn't absolve police of their actions.

"Everybody pause and take a deep breath," he wrote in response to many of the tweets. "Read what "I" wrote. Read the book. Your assumptions are completely false."
