PGCPS Bus Rear-Ended By Car, Catches On Fire With 24 Kids On Board: School

A PGCPS bus with 24 kids on board caught on fire after it was rear-ended by a car Tuesday morning. No injuries were reported, officials say.

A spokesperson for Prince George's County Public Schools told Patch that Bus 4146 was transporting 24 students to Walker Mill Middle School. The collision caused the engine of the car to catch on fire, which ignited the rear of the bus.

UPPER MARLBORO, MD — A school bus with 24 students on board caught on fire Tuesday shortly before 10 a.m. on the outer loop Capital Beltway at Ritchie Marlboro Road after a car rear-ended the bus.

No injuries were reported, according to the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department.

The students, bus driver and car's driver all evacuated. A good Samaritan and a 7News employee who was behind the fiery crash helped the driver evacuate from the car while it was actively on fire.

A spokesperson for Prince George's County Public Schools told Patch that Bus 4146 was transporting 24 students to Walker Mill Middle School. The collision caused the engine of the car to catch on fire, which ignited the rear of the bus.

"The bus driver safely evacuated all students to a location away from the bus. EMS responded to the scene. Another bus was sent to the scene to pick up the students and driver and transport them to school where they were further evaluated by Prince George’s County EMTs. There are no reports of injuries at this time," the PGCPS spokesperson told Patch.
