Capitol Heights Man Charged With Murder In Takoma Park Shooting
A Capitol Heights man is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of a man in a Takoma Park apartment stairwell, police said.
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — A Capitol Heights man has been charged with murder in the shooting death of a Takoma Park man last month in an apartment building stairwell.
Prince George’s County Police arrested Wilmer Echenique-Navarro, 22, of Capitol Heights for his role in the shooting death of 40-year-old Derek Coleman of no fixed address.
About 7:15 a.m. on March 3, police were called to the 6700 block of New Hampshire Avenue in Takoma Park for a shooting. Coleman was found in the stairway suffering from a gunshot wound and pronounced dead at the scene, police said in a news release.

On April 15, the department's fugitive unit took Echenique-Navarro into custody.
Police said Wilmer Echenique-Navarro has admitted shooting Coleman. The motive remains under investigation.

Echenique-Navarro is charged with first- and second-degree murder and is in the custody of the Department of Corrections.
