Firefighter Assaulted Another Firefighter Again In PG County: Allegation

Just a few weeks after a firefighter-on-firefighter violence case wrapped up, another has popped up in Berwyn Heights.

BERWYN HEIGHTS, MD — For the second time in the last two years, firefighters in Prince George's County are involved in an alleged assault on each other. But in a reverse of the 2015 incident, a volunteer firefighter is claiming that a career firefighter attacked him while they both responded to a house fire in Berwyn Heights.

Two volunteer firefighters were acquitted in May of attacking two career firefighters in 2015 while responding to a fire in Hyattsville. In this case, Berwyn Heights Police Chief Kenneth Antolik is having a detective investigate second-degree assault in the Berwyn Heights incident that happened Sunday afternoon, according to a WTOP report.

The department's findings should be sent to the State's Attorney's Office by next week.

A volunteer firefighter reportedly told police that a career firefighter attacked him at a fire scene on Ruatan Street near Greenbelt Road and Route 201 on Sunday afternoon. The volunteer firefighter reported back pain.

The report notes that it's possible that a long history of tension between career and volunteer firefighters may have sparked the altercation, although it's too early to say.
