PG County Schools CEO To Step Down

Kevin Maxwell announced on Tuesday that he will give up his post by the end of the year.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD -- Embattled Prince George's County Schools CEO Kevin Maxwell will be stepping down by the end of the year, the school system announced in a Tuesday statement.

Maxwell, who had been hired by Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker back in 2013, has faced calls to resign due to a number of controversies, like allegations about unauthorized pay increases, fraud in graduation rates, and other issues.

"I have decided to focus on my transition from Prince George’s County Public Schools," Maxwell said in the statement. "The numerous distractions that have occurred over the course of this school year are unlike anything I’ve experienced in four decades of working in public education. Without question, they have taken a toll on students, families and staff. It is clear that whoever becomes the next County Executive plans to make a leadership change and I want to ensure a smooth transition for the 2018-2019 academic year."
