Rusty Water Ahead: City Starts Hydrant Flushing Monday

Bowie will flush fire hydrants starting Monday, which can temporarily inject rust into the water, so careful when you wash clothes.

The City of Bowie Public Works Department will begin its fire hydrant flushing and testing program in areas served by city water. The hydrant flushing will take place beginning Aug. 25, and continue through October in this order:

  • Buckingham, Derbyshire, and Forest Drive
  • Somerset and Bowie Forest
  • Tulip Grove including Twin Cedar
  • Foxhill & Long Ridge
  • Kenilworth
  • Heather Hills
  • Meadowbrook
  • Gradys Walk & Glenridge
  • Chapel Forge
  • Victoria Heights & Race Track Rd. Townhouses
  • Idlewild
  • Yorktown & Overbrook
  • Whitehall
  • Rockledge

Visit our website www.cityofbowie.org/flush for updates on the neighborhoods that will have their hydrants flushed during the following week.

When flushing is taking place in your neighborhood or a neighboring one, some discoloration of your water may occur. For this reason, clothes washing is discouraged. If clothes become discolored, residents should keep them wet and re-wash them using a rust remover. Rust remover will be available, at no cost, from City Hall and Public Works offices.

The water is safe for drinking and bathing even though it may be discolored. The discoloration is a result of rust and sediment build up in the water lines and is not harmful. The discoloration should clear in approximately 24 hours. However, since the water mains are all interconnected, flushing of hydrants in adjacent sections could affect your water, as well.
