Schools Celebrate African-American History Month

Prince George's County Public Schools are noting the month with programs and concerts. Find highlights below.

Prince George’s County Public Schools will celebrate African American History Month in February to highlight the contributions of African Americans who have played defining roles in shaping our nation.

Many schools will host programs, activities and concerts. A selected list of events is below; this is not a complete list of activities. Updates will be made periodically and posted online at www.pgcps.org.

Waldon Woods Elementary

February 3
6 p.m. – 7 p.m.

A Century of Black Life, History and Culture: Students at every grade level will be singing and reciting poetry, history, and biographical information to celebrate African American history.

Friendly High School

February 5
6:30 p.m.

Drama club students will present the play, “I Rise.” Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Brandywine Elementary School

8:30 a.m.

Daily Announcements highlighting people from the African American Community.

• Showcase display in the main lobby

• February 6 – African Dress Day

• February 12 – African Storytelling

• February 17 – Mural Judging (All classrooms were given the name of an African American to research and create a class mural)

• February 20 – Luncheon for mural contest winners

• February 26 – Dancers, drummers, and student presentations

Capitol Heights Elementary School

February 12
6:30 p.m.

Laser light demonstration of important events in black history.

Hyattsville Middle School

February 19
6:30 p.m.

The Hyattsville Middle School Creative and Performing Arts Department will present an African American History Concert. The concert will include music that celebrates the lives of African Americans. Students will perform skits, monologues, and musical pieces written by African American composers that depict and embrace African American culture.

Oxon Hill Middle School

February 20
10:30 a.m. -11 a.m.

Oxon Hill Middle School will showcase their talented drama, dance, band, and choir students with a celebration of Black History at the Mall of Prince George’s.

Bladensburg High School

February 23
9:30 a.m.

Congressman John Lewis will address the students of Bladensburg High School about the 50th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday (March 7, 2015) and the current state of race relations and protests in the United States.
