4-Year-Old Dies After Crash on Route 32: Police

Authorities said a sudden stop led to chain-reaction crash involving three vehicles on MD 32 in Howard County.

JESSUP, MD — An Ellicott City child died as the result of a Tuesday night crash on MD 32, the Howard County Police Department reported Wednesday morning. Three vehicles were involved in the crash, which closed eastbound Route 32 for approximately five hours overnight for investigation.

Kamsi Akabudike, 4, was in a child safety seat in the 2003 Honda CRV his mother was driving when she made a sudden stop near Dorsey Run Road around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, police said. The Honda CRV was then hit by a Jeep, which in turn sideswiped an Explorer.

Akabudike was taken to Howard County General Hospital, where authorities said he died overnight.

His mother — Ngozi Akabudike, 36 — was taken to the same hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

According to officials, the driver of the Jeep Wrangler — John A. Clark, 32, of Columbia — was also taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Nicole Powell, 29, of Edgewater and a 2-year-old child inside the 2002 Ford Explorer were not injured, police said.

Route 32 was closed until 1 a.m. Wednesday as authorities investigated the crash. No charges have been filed.
