Man Rescued from Dump Truck on US 29: Police

Crews spent two hours getting driver out from overturned vehicle, Howard County officials said.

One man was hospitalized after the dump truck he was driving hit a barrier on US 29 near Route 40 Thursday morning, leading to the road’s closure for more than four hours and backups for drivers on connecting routes including Route 100 in Columbia.

Just before 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Kenneth Tyrone Beidleman, 29, of Mitchellville, was headed north on US 29 near Route 40 when his dump truck left the road, hit a barrier and overhead sign, then overturned, police said.

When the truck tipped, its contents of rocks and dirt spilled onto southbound lanes of US 29, according to the Howard County Police Department, which reported the highway was closed in both directions in the area until 1 p.m.

One of the tires may have blown out on the 1996 MAC truck, causing the crash, according to preliminary investigation by Howard County police.

It took two hours and dozens of individuals to get the victim out, police reported.

Approximately 40 personnel from four stations within the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services responded to the incident, using specialized tools to free the driver, police said.

In what police said “quickly became a resource-intensive, highly technical extrication,” first responders called upon the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center’s GO-TEAM help treat Beidleman.

The GO-TEAM includes a physician and nurse from shock trauma, who are specially trained to provide critical care in situations where life-threatening injuries are suspected and it will take longer than one hour to free the victim, according to the shock trauma center.

Beidleman was freed after two hours and flown to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, where he was listed in serious but stable condition, police said Thursday afternoon.

Fire and rescue personnel remained at the scene after 4 p.m. with the Maryland Department of the Environment to clean up hazardous materials, according to police.
