'Revolving And Evolving' Showcases Communication

The Howard Community College Dance Company will perform a series of choreographed pieces.

From Howard Community College: Continuing the tradition of bringing compelling and powerful dance to the greater Baltimore region, the Howard Community College (HCC) Dance Company will present its annual concert in three performances April 20-22 at the college's Smith Theatre, located within the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center (HVPA).

Titled “Revolving and Evolving,” the concert reflects themes of evolution and change. The concert features guest choreographers Marielis Garcia from New York City, Sylvana Christopher from Washington, D.C., Melinda Blomquist, Associate Professor at Community College of Baltimore County, along with HCC Dance Faculty.

The concert will open with a film montage by Aamer Alamgir, encapsulating each choreographer’s artistic vision with a window into the rehearsal process. Following is a premiere of “Potensial Disgyrchiant,” choreographed by Melinda Blomquist exploring connections through space and time. Two more premieres, Desiree Koontz-Nachtrieb’s “November in Conversation” and Joan Nicholas-Walker’s “If Not Now,” address themes of politics and protest as they integrate movement, soundscape, props, and projections. Alex Krebs’ premiere of “What’s the Hang Up?!” takes a witty approach as she comments on technology and its effect on interpersonal communication. Elizabeth Higgins also uses humor in her work “Casual Conversations,” as two dancers communicate through quick, rhythmic gestures, and contemporary movement to the music of the Charlie Hunter Trio. Conversely, subtle gesture and partnering imbue Sylvana Christopher’s “Then She Fell,” set to an original score by John Lee. The program concludes with Marielis Garcia’s “Vantage,” in which movement undergoes dynamic and flowing shifts along with original music written and performed by Brad Wentworth.

Performances are April 20-21 at 7 p.m. and April 22 at 3 p.m. in HCC’s Smith Theatre, located within the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia, Maryland. There will be a post-show discussion following the performance on April 20.
