Crofton Gold’s Gym gears up for Marley Station Spin-A-Thon

More than 20 Crofton aerobic spinners to participate in Marley Station Mall Spin-A-Thon to curb spread of diabetes.

Five Baltimore area Gold’s Gyms are gearing up for the fifth Annual “Spin-A-Thon” at Marley Station Mall to raise money for the American Diabetes Association.

Spin aerobics teams from the Bowie, Crofton, Dundalk, Glen Burnie and Marley Station gym branches will take over the mall’s center court Saturday from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Crofton Gold’s Gym group exercise director Kimberly Murphy said spinners raised $35,000 last year for the ADA. She said spinners are working out to help people learn more about diabetes.

“Exercise can fight diabetes. So if you exercise, you can lower your insulin and blood sugar levels and in some cases exercise can help people come off their diabetes medicine,” Murphy added.

Murphy said organizers are aiming to raise $50,000 this year.

Gold’s will supply 92 spin bikes for the event.

More than 180 riders will take turns on the bikes throughout the four-hour event.

Various activities such as pretzel rolling, children’s games and gift card giveaways are also slated for the Spin-A-Thon.

“This is one of the team’s fundraising events to get them ready for the Tour de Cure,” Murphy said.

Gold’s is a corporate sponsor for Maryland’s Tour de Cure on May 7.

“Many of the people who are coming to ride in the Spin-A-Thon are training for May. It’s like a kickoff event to get everybody ready for the long Tour de Cure,” Murphy said.
