A man who was critically injured in a police-involved shootout Wednesday morning in Catonsville has died, according to county sources familiar with the investigation.

Baltimore County police were serving a warrant at a home on Roberts Avenue in connection with a shooting that took place Aug. 19 on nearby Winters Lane.ย

However, county sources familiar with the investigation say that the man who died this afternoon at Maryland Shock Trauma Center was not the Aug. 19 suspect. That person was not in the house, sources say.

A Baltimore County police officer was also fatallyย woundedย in the shootout.

Officer Jason Schneider, 36, was a 13-year veteran of the force, assigned to the tactical division since 2004, according to police.

The shooting occurred aroundย 5:30 a.m.,ย The Baltimore Sunย reported.ย

Police said Schneider was going room-to-room inside the home when he was shot several times, butย heย was able to return fire and hit a suspect. Both were transferredย in critical conditionย to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where Schneider died from his injuries.

Police have not yet released the name of the suspect.ย

Schneider and other officers were serving a warrant connected to the Aug. 19ย shootingย that took place nearby in the 100 block of Winters Lane, police said. Theย 29-year-oldย victim in that incident wasย hospitalized but isย expected to survive his injuries, police said.ย

Chief James W. Johnson said the following in a statement: "Jason was extraordinarilyย experienced.ย He was a leader within the unit.ย This is a terrible loss for Baltimore County. His noble work is greatly appreciated, and his bravery andย role in the great human experience brought us here today. Low crime rates mean nothing today...all that matters is that we lost a police officer."

Gov. Martin O'Malley has ordered state flags toย fly at half-staffย to honor Schneider.

On Aug. 17, two men were injured inย a shootingย on Edmondson Avenue.ย On Aug. 21, aย 16-year-old boy wasย shot in the armย in the Woodlawnย area of Catonsville.
