SunTrust's J. Scott Wilfong Named a Most Admired CEO by The Daily Record

Scott Wilfong, president and CEO of SunTrust Bank Greater Washington/Maryland, has been named a most admired CEO by The Daily Record

J. Scott Wilfong, chairman, president and CEO of SunTrust Bank, Greater Washington/Maryland, which is comprised of the District of Columbia, Maryland and Northern Virginia and operates a network of over 260 offices, has been named a Most Admired CEO by The Daily Record.

“To be called a Most Admired CEO by The Daily Record means that these leaders understand that they cannot succeed by themselves,” said Suzanne Fischer-Huettner, publisher of The Daily Record. “The Most Admired CEOs were nominated by their employees. Their colleagues took the time to complete the nomination form because these CEOs set the example for others to emulate. That is high praise, and The Daily Record is very pleased to call them Most Admired CEOs.”

A 42-year veteran of the banking industry, Wilfong previously served as president and CEO of SunTrust Bank, Atlanta and president and CEO of SunTrust Bank, Maryland. Prior to joining a SunTrust predecessor in 1997, Wilfong worked as senior vice president and commercial division manager at First National Bank of Maryland. Wilfong began his banking career with Equitable Trust Company in 1972.

“The Daily Record honors the Most Admired CEOs not only for their many accomplishments and outstanding leadership but also for having the insight to select carefully those with whom they surround themselves,” said Fischer-Huettner. “Their decision making, creativity, leadership and commitment to a better Maryland speak to their character and serve as an example to employees and to their communities.”

Wilfong served as the 2010 chair for the Maryland Bankers Association, Inc., and served on the boards of the American Bankers Association, Baltimore Development Corporation, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond - Baltimore Branch, George Mason University Foundation, Mercy Health Services, Inc., and Loyola College’s Sellinger School of Business & Management, Operation Hope, Inc., Smithsonian National Zoo, and Virginia Early Childhood Foundation.

Wilfong is a graduate of the Greater Baltimore Committee’s Leadership Program and the Maryland State Leadership Program. He was named 2001 Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals for the State of Maryland and in 2009 received the CEO Business Philanthropic Award from the Washington Business Journal.

A Baltimore native, Wilfong earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Mount St. Mary’s University and an MBA from Loyola College.
