Pedestrian Dies After Parked Car Rolls Down Hill, Traps Woman Underneath

An Edgewater woman died after she was knocked down and run over by a parked car that rolled down a hill.

An Edgewater woman died Monday after she was run over by a parked car that rolled down a hill, trapping her underneath, according to the Anne Arundel County Police Department.

The accident happened at 3:21 p.m. in the 1700 block of Chesapeake Drive in Edgewater. Police say Lee Sheila Mahoney, 73, of Edgewater was walking down the hill on Chesapeake Drive when a parked 2010 Ford Mustang began to drift driverless down the hill behind her. The car struck Mahoney from behind and came to rest on top of her.

David Adam Garman, 23, of Edgewater, the owner of the Mustang, saw his car rolling down the hill and ran from a house to retrieve it. Police say that Garman didn’t realize Mahoney was under the vehicle, so he started the car and began to back it up while Mahoney was underneath.

The preliminary investigation indicates driver error caused the fatal accident, police said. Garman reportedly did not park the vehicle with its wheels turned toward the curb with the parking brake set.
