Personal Data Hacked at University of Maryland

The president of the University of Maryland says a computer security attack breached a database that contains personal information about more than 300,000 faculty, staff, students and others, reports WJZ TV.

University President Wallace Loh said Wednesday that the database contained records of those who have been issued a university ID since 1998.

Loh said the database has information from the College Park and Shady Grove campuses. The records include name, Social Security number, date of birth and university identification number, the station says.

No financial, academic, health, or contact information was compromised, reports the Baltimore Business Journal.

“I am truly sorry,” Wallace wrote in an email to staff and students. “Computer and data security are a very high priority of our university.”

The university is working to determine how the breach occurred, and Loh says state and federal law enforcement officials are investigating.

The university is offering one year of free credit monitoring to anyone affected by the breach. The university has set up a special hotline at 301-405-4440 or people can email the university at datasecurity@umd.edu if they have any questions.
