A Severn man was sentenced Wednesday to 18 months in jail for a 2013 fight in which police said he tried to strangle his uncle with a rope.

Police were called to a fight involving Jason Michael Everett, 26, and his 51-year-old uncle on Jan. 12, 2013. The pair were found in the front yard of a home at the 7900 block of Citadel Drive in Severn. Officers had to remove the rope from the uncle’s neck in order to allow him to breathe, police said.

The uncle was taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police charged Everett with attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault and use of a deadly weapon, according to an earlier Patch story.

The Capital-Gazette reports Everett had entered an Alford plea in the case, which carries the same weight as a guilty plea but the defendant doesn’t admit guilt.

A judge sentenced Everett to 10 years behind bars, with all but 18 months suspended, plus five years of supervised probation, the news outlet reports. Everett will be moved to a mental health treatment facility when space is available, authorities said.
