📰 News we're reading

• JV Football Season Canceled, HCPSS Superintendent Demands Action (patch.com) — Families in Ellicott City are grappling with the abrupt cancellation of Howard High School's junior varsity football season after a serious locker room bullying incident led to charges against seven players. As investigations continue, the superintendent is ordering tighter locker room supervision, clearer expectations for student behavior, and better reporting of bullying to protect students in Howard County schools.

• Is Oct. 12 Columbus Day? It depends on where you live (newsbreak.com) — Howard County will observe Oct. 12 as Indigenous Peoples' Day, closing government offices, local courts, 50+ centers, the Robinson Nature Center, and the B&O Ellicott City Station Museum while keeping trash collection, parks, and major community centers open. Ellicott City residents should note that Roger Carter Community Center and emergency services will operate normally, and regular RTA bus service and parking rules will remain in effect.
