CCBC Essex events for the week of March 12-18, 2012

Celebrate Women's History Month with a look at women in music at the March 16 Music Forum at CCBC Essex featuring Lauren Pelon as guest artist .

March 16 – CCBC Essex
Music Forum – Lauren Pelon Women in Music: Someone Will Remember Us
12:20 p.m., Building E, Recital Hall, 7201 Rossville Blvd
Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council “Artist of the Year” Lauren Pelon traces the story of women in music and performs music from around the world.  Crossing the boundaries of time, distance and culture, Pelon sings and plays almost 25 ancient and modern instruments, some of which were traditionally played by women, some forbidden to women. 

According to Pelon, the program melds her original compositions with her arrangements of music from ancient Greece, medieval Europe and contemporary Africa, America and Estonia.  She will play the lute, lyre, hurdy-gurdy, recorders, gemshorn, pennywhistles, ocarina, Kiowa courting flute, eagle bone flute, cornamuse, krummhorn, schreierpfeife, shawm, rackett, concertina, electric wind instrument and MIDI-pedalboard. 
Free.  No tickets required.

March 16 – CCBC Dundalk
CCBC Henrietta Lacks Scholarship Fundraiser -- The Dundalk premiere of Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey
6 p.m., Friday, March 16, John E. Ravekes Theatre, K Building, 7200 Sollers Point Road
Elmo and his creator, Kevin Clash, will be appearing at the Dundalk premiere of Constance Marks' documentary, Being Elmo: A puppeteer’s Journey, to raise money for the CCBC Henrietta Lacks Scholarship Fund for students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) at CCBC. Lacks, a Turner Station resident who died at age 31 of cervical cancer, was found to have cervical cells that survived longer than any before.  Today, these HeLa cells are used to create the polio vaccine and for research on AIDS, cancer and the effects of radiation on cells. 
This fundraiser was organized by the CCBC Dundalk Mass Communications class and Student Life. For details, call Michael Walsh at 410-353-6066 (cell)

Astronomy program’s Star Party Observing Session
8-10 p.m., Observatory at CCBC Dundalk, 7200 Sollers Point Road

March 17 – CCBC Catonsville
Benjamin Banneker Planetarium Show – Space Bunny
10 a.m. Room D-003, D Building, 800 South Rolling Road
Follow the adventures of an Easter Bunny who lives in a space colony and encounters a rogue black hole that transports him to another universe.
Free. No registration or tickets are required.
