An hour from DC, this Maryland field still looks like 1864, and admission is free (wheninyourstate.com) — Just two miles south of Frederick, you can explore Monocacy National Battlefield for free, walking or driving through fields that still resemble 1864 and learning how this "battle that saved Washington" unfolded. The newly updated visitor center, self-guided auto tour, multiple hiking trails, living-history events, and even a free audio tour make it an easy full-day outing right in Frederick's backyard.
   

2. Sass Magazine Presents: Wine and Wills with Community Foundation of Frederick County (fredericknewspost.com) — Frederick County residents are invited to a relaxed Wine and Wills evening hosted by Sass Magazine and the Community Foundation of Frederick County, featuring approachable guidance on wills and estate planning. Attendees 21 and older can pre-register for expert mini-consultations, myth-busting explanations of key documents, and a featured drink, with limited spots and tickets required for entry.
   

3. 2026 General Election: Key Voting Dates for Frederick County and Other Area Voters (wfmd.com) — Frederick County voters have key deadlines coming up for the November 3, 2026 general election, including an October 13 registration cutoff and October 22–29 early voting. You'll also find clear timelines for requesting and returning mail-in ballots, plus a quick rundown of rules for nearby Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia counties.
   

4. PSC opens case file for Valley Link transmission line protests (dominionpost.com) — A major 765-kilovolt transmission project called Valley Link is planned to run from Putnam County, West Virginia into Frederick County, Maryland, and West Virginia regulators have already opened a case file for public protests. More than 1,400 comments have been filed raising concerns about land impacts and who benefits from the power, ahead of a formal case expected in 2027.
   

5. Two Local Men Charged in UMD Residential Burglaries (wfmd.com) — A Frederick teen is among two men charged after a string of residential burglaries and related incidents on the University of Maryland's College Park campus. Police say community tips helped link the suspects to five August 30 break-ins, including reports of intruders entering student rooms, and are urging continued vigilance and reporting of suspicious activity.
