In October of this year, the Washington Post covered the recent population increases and revitalizations happening in Frederick County. This ‘mini-boom’, as it was affectionately dubbed, has many wonderful effects on the county, the city, and adjacent towns like Urbana.
The Washington Post notes that throughout the entire Washington region, “few places have benefited more from the phenomenon than downtown Frederick, where a flourishing restaurant, bar and art scene has transformed the 18th century county seat into a mini-D.C.” The Post continues on to point out one major quality that makes Frederick and the surrounding area such a desirable place to live and work: walkability.

Walkability remains a hot topic for new housing developments across the country. Communities that promote walkability, known as mixed-use or neo-traditional communities, are quickly moving to the top of the list for homebuyers everywhere. And as you know, Villages of Urbana is considered one of these types of developments.
Just last year, the Urban Land Institute conducted a poll to see why these urban neighborhoods keep growing in popularity. “Millennials – who along with empty-nesters are leading the movement back to cities large and small – place a premium on walkability and distance to work and school.” The survey also showed that there’s been a shift in tastes across all generations. More than half of those surveyed said they would prefer to live near a “mix of shops, restaurants and offices.”
