Gaithersburg Election Results: Ashman, Sayles And Sesma Win

Less than 10% of Gaithersburg's registered voters turned out Tuesday to elect the unopposed mayor and fill two council seats.

GAITHERSBURG, MD — Unofficial results from the Nov. 7 election show that Mayor Jud Ashman has been re-elected and Laurie-Anne Sayles and Michael A. Sesma have been elected to the Gaithersburg City Council, according to the city's website.

The results are expected to be certified by the Gaithersburg Board of Supervisors of Elections on Wednesday, when absentee and provisional ballots will also be counted. Once certified, the newly elected officials will be sworn in at a special meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 13, at City Hall. They will each serve a four-year term.

City officials say 3,282 voters cast ballots at the polls, out of 35,330 registered voters, or 9.29 percent. Voter turnout in the 2015 City of Gaithersburg election for mayor and three City Council members was 11.09 percent. The 2017 elections included two opportunities for early voting.
