Skipjack Martha Lewis Prepares to Launch

Can you volunteer to help the old oyster ship make a splash?

Following a year of being beached for costly repairs, the Skipjack Martha Lewis is ready to get her hull wet.

The oyster ship has been getting restored from keel to mast, once it was discovered that the boat built in 1955 needed improvements to stay afloat.

This Friday, she will take the plunge and get back into the water, according to the Chesapeake Heritage Conservancy, the organization that oversees her care.

She will make her return to the water at 2 p.m. on Friday. “She will then be sitting in the slings as she gets reacquainted with the bay,” according to a post on her Facebook page.

The boat is docked at the Tidewater Yacht Service at 321 East Cromwell Street in Baltimore.

Volunteers are needed to help with painting on Thursday, to get the Skipjack Martha Lewis into position on Friday, and to check on her Saturday and Sunday. Contact Brady Stroh at bradystroh@gmail.com for more information or to volunteer.
