📰 News we're reading

1. Happy Farm Botanicals, Inc. - 731926 - 09/01/2026 (fda.gov) — A Hyattsville drug manufacturer, Happy Farm Botanicals on West Street, has been cited by the FDA for serious quality-control and manufacturing violations involving its over-the-counter products. Federal inspectors say the company failed to properly test ingredients, validate processes, and ensure product stability, and they warn that future enforcement actions, including recalls or legal steps, are possible if problems aren't fixed.

2. Your Immigration Hearing May Have Moved to a Secret Building — Here's How to Check: REPORT (latintimes.com) — If you or someone you know has an immigration case in Hyattsville, be aware that some hearings are being quietly moved from the local court to unmarked buildings in Washington, D.C. and Falls Church, sometimes with little or no mailed notice. Missing a newly reassigned hearing can trigger an automatic deportation order, so advocates urge checking your case status online, by phone, and directly with the court clerk.

3. Driver sentenced in high-speed Hyattsville crash that killed mother of 2 (dcnewsnow.com) — A case that began with a Hyattsville City police traffic stop has ended with an eight-year sentence for the driver who killed 33-year-old mother of two Esmerelda Carolina Montoya Perez while fleeing in 2025. Prosecutors say he sped up to 90 mph along East-West Highway before fatally striking her as she waited for a bus, and he'll also serve five years of supervised probation.

4. How Terps Spent the Summer Doing Good in 2026 (umd.edu) — University of Maryland students spent the summer on service projects ranging from biodiversity work in nearby Hyattsville to global health efforts in Sierra Leone and Madagascar. One Terp helped host "mothing" nights that track nighttime pollinators and spark local conservation conversations, while others supported veterans, foster youth, and first-generation Prince George's County students.

5. Coalition demands Prince George's revoke permit allowing ICE to expand presence in Hyattsville (thebanner.com) — Hyattsville residents should know that immigrant rights groups are pressuring Prince George's County to revoke a permit allowing ICE to expand its legal offices on Belcrest Road near the Hyattsville Immigration Court. County leaders say they oppose the expansion and are exploring ways to pull the permit, while protesters plan to keep rallying outside the Metro 1 building until ICE's presence is reduced.
