- Governor Larry Hogan announced on Sept. 23 that Maryland is providing hospitals with maximum flexibility to mitigate staffing shortages. According to Gov. Hogan, Maryland has the nation's lowest COVID-19 case rate. He said that "we continue to withstand the Delta variant surge better than just about any other state." Therefore, the state is "taking proactive steps to maximize the ability of our hospitals to increase their nursing workforce." (Maryland.gov)
- President of the Laurel City Council, Valerie M.A. Nicholas, announced yesterday that she will not seek reelection in November 2021. Nicholas served as a Laurel City Council member for the past ten years. She was the first African American woman to serve on this council and be president of it. Now, she is ready to move into the next chapter of her life. (City of Laurel)
- The U.S. Senate is debating whether to raise the federal debt ceiling. Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen spoke on the Senate floor yesterday, urging Senate Republicans to vote in support of the resolution already passed by the House. A passing vote would continue to fund the government and it would raise the debt ceiling. According to the Associated Press, the federal government could shut down if funding stops on Sept. 30 which is the end of the fiscal year. (WDVM)
- Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) began the new school year on Sept. 8. Teachers must now request that parents equip their students with masks, Lysol spray, wipes and other personal protective equipment for the classroom. They say that educators appreciate the "resiliency" of elementary school-age children. (Washington Informer)
