Operation Allies Refuge + Racial Disparities In Maternal Health

  1. A decision is coming this week on the route Hillside Equestrian Meadows' multiple stakes winner Laki will take to defend his title next month in the $200,000 Grade 3 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash at Laurel Park. Laki breezed an easy half-mile in :50.40 Sunday at historic Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. (Paulick Report)
  2. Governor Larry Hogan announced on Monday that the State of Maryland is committed to resettling more Afghan interpreters who have contributed to U.S. efforts in Afghanistan. In the coming weeks, Maryland already expects to receive at least 180 more Afghan nationals through 'Operation Allies Refuge,' an ongoing operation which provides Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) to Afghan and Iraqi nationals who have contributed to U.S. efforts.   3. A Maryland legislator said the state needs to do more to prevent racial disparities in maternal health outcomes. Del. Jheanelle Wilkins, speaking at an online event on birthing inequities, pointed to overall maternal mortality rates for Maryland women that dropped 16% from 2013 to 2017. But during the same time, she noted four times more Black and brown women died after giving birth than white women. (Public News Service)

  • Uhuru Quilters Guild Exhibit — Montpelier House Museum presents the latest creations of the Uhuru Quilters Guild. Come see these beautiful works, a mix of full size and challenge size quilts featuring traditional as well as original designs. The Uhuru Quilters Guild seeks to promote the work and accomplishments of African American quilters and to preserve the tradition, culture and history of quilting. (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
  • Auricular Acupuncture at MUIH Main Campus — Master's level acupuncture students, under supervision by licensed and experienced faculty, are providing safe and effective auricular treatments. Limit: Six participants per seating to ensure a safe, physically distanced, and peaceful experience. (12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.)
