Unidentified Man Shot, Killed + Council Member Leszcz​ Retires

Here are the top four stories today in Laurel:

  1. An unidentified man was shot and killed Saturday night in Laurel. Police said he was found inside of a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to an area hospital where he died. An investigation into the shooting is underway. (WJLA)
  2. Six Flags America in Prince George's County closed more than an hour ahead of schedule on Saturday due to multiple fights on park grounds. Officers stationed at the park responded to the fights. No one was arrested. A park spokesperson told WTOP that they were "prioritizing the safety of guests when they made the decision to close the park early." (WTOP)
  3. Council Member Michael R. Leszcz released a letter on Sept. 24 saying that he will not be seeking reelection this year, ending his 25 years on the Laurel City Council. Leszcz said that he "enjoyed working with the administration and other members of the City Council to provide oversight of City budgets and Capital Improvement Plans" and noted his other work-related accomplishments. He plans to stay at his current address and enjoy his retirement years with wife, Mary Eileen. (City of Laurel)
  4. Governor Larry Hogan announced on Sept. 24, the creation of the Office of Outdoor Recreation within the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the hiring of J. Daryl Anthony to serve as its first executive director. According to a press release, Anthony will work with DNR, other agencies and stakeholders to support and enhance outdoor recreation opportunities and the economic benefits they produce. The outdoor recreation industry is of growing economic importance in both urban and rural areas. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis recently reported that outdoor recreation makes up 2.2% of U.S. GDP, generating $778 billion in gross output and supporting 5.2 million jobs. (Maryland.gov)
