📰 News we're reading

1. 'Starting to hurt the industry': Ocean City hotels beat out by vacation rentals in data comparison from June (coasttv.com) — Ocean City hotels are seeing fewer bookings this season as more visitors choose vacation rentals, even though hotel room rates are up about $22 over last June. Local hoteliers say shorter stays are squeezing profits, while rental managers report roughly 10% gains as families seek more space and flexibility.

2. Two boats crash in Isle of Wight Bay, one man flown to Shock Trauma (coasttv.com) — A daytime boat collision in Ocean City’s Isle of Wight Bay injured the operator of a pontoon boat, who was flown conscious and alert to Shock Trauma in Baltimore. Maryland Natural Resources Police and the Ocean City Fire Department responded, with one additional person seeking treatment for lower-body injuries as investigators work to determine what caused the crash.

3. Ocean City will get bigger beaches after federal funding snag (thebanner.com) — Ocean City’s beachfront is set for a major $27 million sand replenishment starting this October, bringing wider beaches but some off‑season block‑by‑block closures. Funded by Maryland, Worcester County, the town, and the U.S. Army Corps, the project will add roughly 800,000 cubic yards of sand to restore storm protection standards and reduce future flood and storm damage risks.

4. Deputy State Fire Marshal Mark Grove named 2025 Deputy State Fire Marshal of the Year (nottinghammd.com) — Ocean City recently hosted the Maryland State Firefighters Association convention where Deputy State Fire Marshal Mark Grove was honored as the 2025 Deputy State Fire Marshal of the Year. Grove, based in Western Maryland, led dozens of complex fire and explosive investigations, including major fatal and high‑rise fires, and achieved an arrest rate far above national averages.
