Cookies for Life, 2013

Last month our Patch editor, Tim, wrote about my efforts to raise awareness of suicide and depression. It is a very personal cause: I have battled both depression and suicidal ideation.

In an effort to help end the stigma that is all too often associated with suicide and depression, I self-published a collection of poems I had written in 2008 (during my darkest days). The goal of sharing these most intimate of thoughts was to show others that it is ok to talk about these things. I also wanted to be an example of how things do get better.

But I can only reach so many people. That is why I fully support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. One of the great ways they raise awareness and funds is through community Out of the Darkness Walks, one of which will be in Columbia on October 5.

The Cookies for Life team—created by my wife, Laura, last year—will be walking. We would love to see you out there. Suicide is something that can affect anyone and something that has affected too many.

About the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is at the forefront of research, education and prevention initiatives designed to reduce loss of life from suicide. With more than 36,000 lives lost each year in the U.S. and over one million worldwide, the importance of AFSP's mission has never been greater, nor our work more urgent.

About Out of the Darkness Community Walks

There are 3-5 mile walks taking place in over 200 communities across the country this fall. By walking in the Out of the Darkness Community Walks, you will be walking with thousands of people nationwide to raise money for AFSP's vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide, advocate for mental health issues, and assist survivors of suicide loss.
