I-795 Pavement Cracks Under Heat: SHA

Crews will make repairs to Interstate 795 after it buckled, State Highway Administration officials reported.

OWINGS MILLS, MD — The concrete that buckled under the heat on Interstate 795 Monday will be repaired overnight Tuesday, according to the State Highway Administration.

Drivers are advised to anticipate double lane closures on I-795 while crews make repairs.

The work will be done between 8 p.m. Tuesday and 5 a.m. Wednesday near Owings Mills Boulevard.

State highway officials had closed some of the lanes on I-795 Monday afternoon, when temperatures were in the low 90s. The heat had expanded the concrete and cracked the pavement, officials reported.

Temperatures in the Baltimore region were even higher on Tuesday, when the area tied the record temperature of 97 degrees.

PREVIOUS REPORT — State highway officials had to close lanes on Interstate 795 Monday afternoon when the pavement buckled amid the afternoon heat. Temperatures reached the mid 90s on Monday, topping out at 94 degrees in the Reisterstown area after 4 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Around that time, the Maryland State Highway Administration closed the two left lanes on I-795 before Owings Mills Boulevard for an emergency repair.

"Heat expanded concrete, cracking I-795 pavement," state highway officials reported.

The temporary repair was complete before 8 p.m.

Crews plan to make the permanent fix to the pavement Tuesday evening, according to the State Highway Administration.
