I have been hearing talk and laughter around the halls of Parkville High School, surrounding the upcoming musical production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Do you know the premise of the show? It's a farce, it's funny, and it's fun. It's basically the age-old story of one guy setting up a match between two other people. Add a few ancient Romans slaves, and a house of virgins, toss in a few 21st century teens, a high school auditorium, a terrific director, and high school musicians, and you've got a show!
The musical is set in the time of Greek and Roman gods. Pseudolus is the laziest slave in Rome. His master Hero has fallen in love with a young virgin. All Pseudolus has to do is to win the young virgin for his master, and he can be free and not have to work anymore. But can it be that easy? It can't. But it is fun, farcical, musical, and worth the $5.00 entry fee.
Your cast of characters include Parkville High School freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and maybe even a cameo appearance by a faculty member. You might catch a glimpse of the Class of 2014's prospective valedictorian, a rising star of the Class of 2017, and you might even catch the next contestant from America's Got Talent - well, at least they auditioned while the talent search crew was in Baltimore!
Our show will be on stage on April 3rd, 4th, and 5th at 7:00 each night. Tickets are $5 each, and are sold at the door. Parkville High School's theatre arts program no longer exists as part of the school curriculum, so this production is being put together exclusively after school, and into the early evenings. Unlike my own alma mater, there is no set design class at our school, nor is there a drama class. The kids and teacher who are working on this show are doing it all in their after-school time. The kids involved in the show are trying to raise money to assist with costume and set production, by selling advertising space in the show's program. If you are reading this, and think you would like to contribute to their efforts, please contact me through email at anewman@bcps.org I'll put you directly in contact with the muscial's director!
