Firefighter Who Aided Officer Caprio Graduates From Academy

As a Perry Hall man officially became a probationary firefighter, he reflected upon providing first aid outside his door last year.

PERRY HALL, MD — The man who rendered first aid to Officer Amy Caprio last May in Perry Hall was one of 27 recruits to graduate from the Baltimore County Fire-Rescue Academy this week. Logan Kurek, 23, is now officially a probationary firefighter.

Kurek, who lives in Perry Hall, is a member of the Kingsville Volunteer Fire Company.

In May 2018, he saw someone in distress in front of his house and began performing CPR.

The victim was Caprio. The 29-year-old police officer was killed while responding to a suspicious circumstance at 1:58 p.m. on May 21 on Linwen Way in Perry Hall.

Authorities said Caprio learned a black Jeep was the suspect vehicle, and four suspects may be in the area committing a burglary. Recognizing a possibly dangerous situation, she called for clearance of radio transmissions as she approached what turned out to be a stolen Jeep.

When the driver refused to get out after she ordered him to do so, police said the 16-year-old suspect instead drove toward Caprio, who was standing in front of her patrol car.

Authorities said Caprio fired a single round into the windshield of the Jeep before it hit her.

Kurek heard his younger brother screaming and ran outside to find Caprio had been run over, and he began performing CPR, according to the Associated Press.

“I think about her every day,” Kurek told ABC 2 on Tuesday, Jan. 8, upon graduating from the academy. "She’s always in my mind...I’m just glad that I was home that day to help her."

Kurek was honored as the grand marshal of the Kingsville Fourth of July Parade over the summer.

Now that he has graduated from the academy, he is expected to work at the Parkville Station 10 on Putty Hill Avenue, ABC 2 reported.

He was not the only Kingsville Volunteer Fire Company member to graduate this week. The fire company sent its congratulations to Kurek as well as Evan Schaffer, now also a probationary firefighter with the county, and Eric Ernst, now a probationary paramedic for Baltimore County.
