Winecream to Bring Boozy Dessert Mashup to Baltimore, DC Stores

Company flash freezes fruity wine with ice cream and toppings for a zinger of a dessert that will be in regional liquor stores soon.

BALTIMORE, MD — A family-owned Baltimore County business is bringing its new mashup of two essential food groups – wine and ice cream – to stores across Maryland and the Washington, D.C., area.

Winecream uses liquid nitrogen to flash freeze your choice of wine, topped with ice cream, into a dessert that turns creamy and, retains the zing of the alcohol.

Each dessert is about 10 percent alcohol by volume, the alcoholic equivalent of the average glass of wine, the website says.

The creation of the Gorham family, Winecream was borne out of Christmas dinner three years ago, when the couldn’t decide whether to have more wine, or dig into ice cream. And they wondered how they could combine the two.

“We wanted ice cream, but we didn’t want to stop drinking wine,” Dan Gorham told WTOP. “It’s Coldstone for adults.”

Gorham, an engineer, and his sister Katie, a public health communications specialist at Johns Hopkins, spent about a year developing their dessert.

Until now, the company has only offered its products at area festivals and by mail order. You can sample the fermented dessert June 4 and 5 at the Great Grapes Wine and Food Festival in Hunt Valley, or June 11 at the Gunpowder Spring Arts Fest in Parkton.

Or you can shop online and order a pint of mixed berries or other flavors for $19.99. The house-made ice cream base is mixed with berry wine, blueberry puree, sliced strawberries and whole blueberries.

But, Winecream – with the motto “Delicious, Boozy Dessert” -- is about to expand across the region.

The family plans to move the business from northern Baltimore County to a warehouse space in West Baltimore where they can ferment the wine, make the Winecream and package it for sale.

Pints of Winecream should be stocked in freezers in liquor stores in the Baltimore and D.C. areas by July, Gorham says.
